Conventions of a film trailer

What are the most recognisable conventions of a film trailer?

  • They highlight the best moments of a film.
  • The audience are not shown the narrative order of events.
  • They film stars are showcased.
  • Some images stay on screen just long enough for our minds to comprehend them.
  • Conversations between characters usually consist of one line each.
  • Unusual angles are often used to show events or characters.
  • Action is interspersed with credits on screen.
  • Voiceovers tell the story and give credit information (rarely used in horror trailers).
  • Music plays and important role in creating an atmosphere and in horror creates suspense and tension.
  • The title of the film doesnt appear until the end.
  • The trailer builds to a climax, where it ends.
